Questions
Everything you need to know before, during, and after your project.
Landscaping
What fertilizer should I use for my new plants?
For most new plantings we recommend a slow-release balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10. Avoid high-nitrogen options on new plants — they push leafy growth instead of roots. After the first season, switch to something matched to your specific plants. When in doubt, a soil test from the UW Extension is the most accurate guide.
How often should I water my newly seeded lawn?
Water lightly 2–3 times per day for the first 2–3 weeks, keeping the top inch of soil consistently moist. Once the grass hits about 3 inches tall, taper to deeper watering once or twice a week. Don't let the seed dry out in those first few weeks — that's the most common reason new lawns fail.
How often should I re-mulch my garden beds?
Once a year, typically in spring. Mulch breaks down over time which is great for your soil, but once it drops below 2 inches it stops suppressing weeds and retaining moisture. A fresh 2–3 inch layer each spring keeps your beds looking sharp and your plants healthy. Cedar mulch tends to last a bit longer than hardwood.
Do you offer seasonal cleanups or ongoing maintenance?
Yes — we offer spring and fall seasonal cleanups including debris removal, bed edging, cutting back perennials, and general yard cleanup. We're also adding lawn care maintenance to our services in 2025. Reach out and we can put together a recurring schedule that fits your property.
Can you transplant existing trees or shrubs?
In many cases yes — especially smaller trees and shrubs moved in early spring or fall when the plant is dormant. Success depends on the size, species, and how established the root system is. We'll give you an honest answer during your estimate on whether transplanting makes sense or replacement is the better call.
Hardscaping
Will my pavers crack?
Individual pavers are much less likely to crack than poured concrete because they flex with the ground as it freezes and thaws. If one does crack or shift it can be replaced individually — no tearing out the whole patio. Proper base preparation is the key to long-term stability, which is why we don't cut corners on compaction.
How often do I need to reseal my paver joints?
Polymeric sand joints hold up well for 3–5 years. If you apply a paver sealer, plan to reseal every 2–3 years depending on traffic and sun exposure. Signs it's time: faded color, joint sand washing away, or weeds pushing through. Regular sealing makes the surface easier to clean and keeps stains from setting.
Can I pressure wash my pavers?
Yes, but carefully. A low to medium setting is fine — high pressure blasts out your polymeric sand joints and then you'll need to refill them. Use a wide fan tip, keep the nozzle moving, and avoid holding it directly over the joints. After washing it's a good time to add sand where needed before resealing.
How long will a paver patio last?
A properly installed paver patio can last 25–50 years or more. The pavers themselves are extremely durable — it's the base and joints that determine longevity. We install with a compacted gravel base and polymeric sand so you get the best possible foundation. With basic maintenance, your patio should outlast your time in the house.
How do you prevent weeds from growing between pavers?
We use polymeric sand in the joints which hardens when wet and creates a barrier that makes it very difficult for weeds to establish. We also install landscape fabric under the base layer. No system is 100% weed-proof forever, but with polymeric sand and proper sealing you should see minimal weed growth for several years.
How do I choose the right pavers for my project?
We'll walk you through this during your estimate. The main things to consider are your home's style, how you'll use the space, and your budget. Concrete pavers are most cost-effective and come in a huge range of styles. Natural stone like flagstone or travertine costs more but has a timeless, high-end look. We carry samples and will help you find the right fit.
Artificial Turf
Is artificial turf safe for pets?
Yes — we offer pet-friendly turf options that are non-toxic, lead-free, and drain extremely well so liquids pass straight through instead of pooling. They hold up much better than natural grass under heavy pet use, and you won't deal with muddy paw prints or dead spots.
Does artificial turf get hot in the summer?
It can get warmer than natural grass on hot sunny days — this is a known limitation. In shaded areas it's not an issue. For full-sun areas we can discuss heat-reduction turf options, and rinsing the surface with water before use brings the temperature down quickly.
How do you maintain artificial turf?
Occasional brushing keeps the blades upright and looking natural. Debris like leaves should be blown or raked off periodically. For pet turf, rinsing regularly prevents odor buildup. We offer professional grooming services for clients who want to keep their turf in top shape year-round.
Policies & Process
Do I need to be home during my project?
Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the work area and have gone over the project details beforehand, most jobs can be completed without you home. We'll send photos when the work is done and reach out before proceeding if any decisions come up mid-project.
What happens if weather delays the work?
We'll reschedule as soon as possible and keep you informed. We never rush a job in bad conditions — it affects the quality of the final product. You'll always hear from us the day before if there's any concern about weather affecting your scheduled date.
How do change orders and add-ons work?
If you want to add to or change the scope of work during a project, we'll put together a quick written change order with the updated cost before any additional work begins. We never add charges without your approval. Small adjustments are usually easy to accommodate — larger additions may need to be scheduled separately.
What is your service area?
We serve Madison and the surrounding Dane County area including Middleton, Verona, Waunakee, Fitchburg, McFarland, Sun Prairie, and beyond. Not sure if we cover your area? Just call or text us at (608) 576-4220.

Call or text us at (608) 576-4220 or email jonahlinfield@ydexteriorvisions.com. We'll set up a time to walk the property, talk through your vision, and put together a detailed written estimate. Estimates are always free with no obligation.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. We offer a 1-year workmanship warranty on all hardscaping and installation projects, and a 1-year plant warranty on new plantings. If something isn't right we'll come back and make it right — no runaround.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards. Payment is typically split between a deposit at the start of the project and the balance upon completion. We do not currently offer financing.
