Tumbled Belgian Paver Patio & Foundation Bed in Middleton, WI

This paver patio installation in Middleton, WI replaced a small pad of pavers that had been set directly on dirt, a few pieces of patio furniture, and beds of lilies and hostas along the back of the house. The homeowners now have a full backyard patio in Quarry Gray Tumbled Belgian pavers from Rochester Concrete Products, with a border that carries around the corner of the house into a new planting bed.

The patio

We cleared the old pad, furniture, and plantings, then built the new patio on a compacted gravel base so it stays level and drains properly — the difference between pavers on dirt and a patio that holds up through Wisconsin freeze-thaw cycles. The field is laid in Quarry Gray Tumbled Belgian, a tumbled-edge paver with a soft, aged look that fits both traditional and newer homes. A soldier-course border of the same paver frames the patio and follows the edge in a clean line, then sweeps around the corner of the house.

The foundation bed

Along the back wall, we built a new mulch bed that wraps the corner and uses the same border stone as the patio, so the bed and patio read as one continuous piece of hardscape instead of two separate projects. The bed was planted with hostas and finished with dark mulch. Plantings we install are covered by our one-year plant warranty.

Finishing the lawn edge

Once the hardscape was in, we regraded the lawn where it meets the patio, seeded it, and covered the seed with straw so it establishes cleanly instead of washing out. When the grass comes in, the patio, bed, and lawn will meet in one finished edge.
