Fieldstone Boulder Edging & Mulched Bed — Hawks Landing, Madison, WI
This backyard in Madison's Hawks Landing neighborhood had a circular paver patio, a row of arborvitae along the lot line, and a young tree with loose fieldstone piled around it. Between them was lawn, a bare patch, and three utility pedestals sitting in the open.
We laid out one continuous bed that runs from the patio edge past the utility pedestals and out to the tree, then set fieldstone boulders along the entire border. The stone was sorted for size and seated into the soil so the edge reads as one line instead of a pile. We laid landscape fabric, mulched the bed, and brought the tree inside the border.
Around the utility pedestals we planted ornamental grasses to soften them without blocking access — the boxes still open, but they stop being the first thing you see from the patio.
Fieldstone edging is the right choice when a yard already has natural stone in it — it matches what's there, it doesn't heave, and it never needs replacing.
